How To Mix Smooth Whey Protein Shakes Without A Blender
UPDATE: Revolutionary new Herbalife shaker bottle finally makes mixing smooth shakes possible in just a few ‘shakes’!
Let’s face it – people who don’t use whey protein just don’t understand. But what would they know of ‘our’ world? What may sound like a straightforward operation to some (i.e.: Add a scoop of whey protein powder to a drinking vessel of some kind, add fluid of some kind, mix somehow, and drink) is actually not that straightforward. Not if you don’t want powdery lumps. Getting whey to mix without a blender can be tricky, and not being able to mix it properly has put many people off of this great protein source. I’ve made this article with my best tips on how to mix whey protein without a blender, so you get a great tasting, smooth whey protein shake. If you own a blender, look away now…
1: Don’t add too much whey protein powder at once
Yes, your dose may be 2-3 scoops, but don’t put all of that in at once. That makes it incredibly difficult to mix – as you probably already know. Instead, add one scoop at a time, mix it up properly (as you’ll know how after finishing this article) and then add another scoop, etc, mix that in, etc.
2: Always mix it in a glass
Mixing whey protein shakes is much easier if you do it in a glass, that way you can see if any powdery residue is sticking to the sides – a common annoyance of whey users – and scrape it off to mix it in.
…but not just any glass – a round-bottomed glass!
Whey protein has a tendency to stick in the gaps of glasses with sharp angled bottoms, and no matter how well you think you’ve mixed it, you often don’t realize how much has stuck in there until you’ve drank up and are left with the sloppy, unappetizing dregs at the bottom.
By using a round-bottomed glass, lumps can’t form in the crevices this way.
3: Add just a tiny bit of liquid at a time
I’m sure you’ve been here before – you’ve added all the fluid in and when it comes to mixing all you seem to be able to do is whirl a load of lumps around the liquid and dread the thought of having to drink it. Well, here’s the best tip of them all – add just a small amount of liquid; just enough to make it a paste. Now, work on mixing that paste by crushing it against the sides with the back of the spoon. And, position the side of the spoon against the side of the glass, and turn the glass by hand – this is a great way of scraping off any whey stuck to the sides of the glass.
Once you’ve mixed it into a smooth paste, add a bit more liquid, mix again, then a bit more liquid, etc, until you are at the desired level.
4: Don’t drink it yet – let it sit for a few minutes
This is important. Even if you think you’ve managed to mix it perfectly, you can be sure you have by letting it sit a while. The small lumps will easily dissolve in a few minutes making it ultra smooth.
During this time, you’ll find you may get a ‘head’ on it. You can either drink it like that – though the head may stick to the side of the glass – or give it a quick whirl with a spoon and gulp it down. I always use a teaspoon to claw out any remaining bits of whey so none goes to waste.
Now you know how to mix whey protein shakes with just a spoon, but now it’s even easier just to use this revolutionary new Herbalife shaker bottle
